Finally got clued in about your blog. Lost luggage and a non- existant flight all in the first few days. That's right, get it over quick. Am relieved to learn that you survived your first mountain hikes. I had my doubts!
Waitangi Day: the Maori did get royally screwed. If they hadn't killed each other off so drastically in the inter-tribal wars 1800 - 1842 they could have kicked the British out, if they had been able to unite. But like us Scots and Irish, they couldn't. Fatal flaw of tribal societies. By the last decade of the 19th Century they were expected soon to die out altogether. They didn't. They are one of the toughest people on earth.
